People In Music History
Milhaud, Darius (1892-1974) French composer, born at Aix-en-Provence; became a
member of the group of composers called the Six. Associated with various
important literary figures, especially Claudel (opera Christopher Columbus,
play Proteus, and other works), and Cocteau (ballets, etc.). Visited Brazil and
the United States, and influenced by jazz as early as 1922-1923 (ballet The
Creation of the World) and also by Latin American music (See Scaramouche).
Notable exponent of Polytonality. Very prolific composer. His other works
include operas Bolivar and David; an arrangement of The Beggar's opera in
French; 18 symphonics, one for wordless chorus with oboe and cello; various
concertos, one for a marimba-and-vibraphone player; 18 string quartets, of
which nos. 14-15 can be played separately or together; Jewish liturgical music;
many songs. In the United States during World War II and frequently afterward.
